The Science Behind the Idea

The patent-pending GILZ air-filtration helmet kit is an homage to the cleanroom invented by Willis Whitfield at Sandia National Laboratories in the 1960s.

A cleanroom uses a system of laminar airflow to provide a constant flow of filtered air. Laminar-flow cleanrooms are used today in hospitals, laboratories, and manufacturing plants.

Like the cleanroom, the GILZ kit draws ambient air through a lab-certified filter. The filter we use was specifically selected for its resistance to both oil and non-oil particulate contaminants of 2.5 microns (PM 2.5) or less. After rigorous testing at an accredited laboratory, results show the helmet prototype is greater than 95% efficient in keeping out harmful particulates. All this is to say, GILZ is a smart solution for helmet wearers in congested urban or smokey environments.

The filtered air travels through the clean air duct and exits through the visor air curtain, delivering a steady stream of clean, cooling air over the wearer’s face. The laminar airflow also acts as a visor defroster, much like the defrost function on your vehicle windshield, improving the visibility of the wearer under conditions where the visor would normally fog.

About the Founder,

While working at the US Embassy in Rwanda, I rode my motorcycle to work every day and was constantly getting behind diesel trucks blowing black soot. I wanted a helmet that filtered out those harmful particulates, but there wasn’t one available on the market—so I decided to build one, and GILZ was born. Once I’d conceived of how I might create an air-filtering helmet, I worked with an engineer to create a prototype; then I proved my concept through rigorous testing at an accredited laboratory. My helmet not only worked, but it also kept me cool and defogged the visor. It was then that I realized my helmet could help all types of helmet wearers, including our men and women in uniform. No matter what environment you’re in, you can ”Breathe with GILZ.”
